How do I make my own contribution to the Pixels for Prostate Cancer page?If you would like to donate to Pixels for Prostate Cancer and add your own special story or dedication, simply click on the "Make a Donation. Buy Pixels Now" button.
You have several choices when selecting an image- you can upload your own image (or select one from our image library), or you can enter text (such as a name) and let our system automatically generate an image for you. This dynamically generated image will contain letters that spell out your desired text.
If you select the dynamic text option, you will need to purchase adjacent boxes equal to the number of letters in your text. For example, if you entered the text "John Smith", you will need to select 10 boxes for the entire text to fit. (Don't forget the space.) Standard boxes are available for $10 each and are reserved for private party/non-commercial use. Premium pixels are available for $100 per box.
When somebody clicks on your image, one of two things can happen. You can either send them to the URL of your choice, or you can create a special "dedication page" which will pop up with your desired text message, along with an optional photo. Please use the text space to enter a special message, inspirational story or tribute of your choice.
What is the Prostate Cancer Research and Education Foundation (PC-REF?) PC-REF, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public foundation, was founded in April, 1997 through the efforts of patients active in the support group movement in San Diego and a physician, Dr. Israel Barken. Dr. Barken is PC-REF's medical and philosophical leader, and promotes the empowerment of the prostate cancer patients through education and the development of a team approach between patient and doctor.
We are vitally interested in identifying and supporting innovative prostate cancer research projects. We provide "seed money" to help develop preliminary results needed to attract major funding. We focus on projects that will help patients sooner rather than later.
PC-REF is unique because we fund seed money grants to initiate new research and the development of new ideas by innovative researchers. Seed money grants allow talented researchers to create the preliminary data required to apply for large operating grants. We fill a critical gap in the progress of new ideas and the development of new tools for treatment and diagnosis. PC-REF operates efficiently and carefully since we are wholly funded by private individuals like you. PC-REF keeps you up to date with the latest medical developments. We coach the whole person, combining conventional and alternative approaches. We focus on research ideas that can benefit today's patients. We work to help patients now.

What kind of Prostate Cancer research will be funded with my donation?All Prostate Cancer grants are managed by Dr. Israel Barken, PC-REF’s founder and medical director. We are currently raising funds for 3 promising research activities:
1. Autoimmunization by using a local treatment like cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, hyperthermia and injecting Dentritic cells (specialized immune cells) directly in the tumor to create vaccination with the destroyed cancer cells that belong to the patient.
2. Studying a new oral agent which is very non toxic and in use for about 80 years. This agent has the same properties of anti tubulin mechanism like the best chemotherapy we have for prostate cancer.
3. Prostatic niche controls differentiation, growth and malignancy of mouse stem cells.
How does “Pixels for Prostate Cancer” work?Donations to PC-REF are allocated space on our “Pixels for Prostate Cancer” image based on the amount of the donation. You can select an image to be placed in your space and include a hyperlink of your choice, or a simple text message which can be used for a story of hope, a memorial, or a message of your choice. Note that we reserve the right to deny or remove any content we deem objectionable. In addition, we reserve the right to move the location of your pixels to more or less desirable locations on our page. Your donation will reserve your space for a period of 5 years. After 5 years, you may choose to renew or release your space.
How did you get this idea?The idea for “Pixels for Prostate Cancer” was inspired by the million dollar home page. We believe that by providing seed money grants for innovative Prostate Cancer research ideas, we can bring relief and comfort to millions of people suffering from this terrible disease.
